Located on the eastern border of France, the Mont Blanc mountain range peaks at over 4,800 metres (about 15,800 feet) above sea level, making it the tallest mountain in Western Europe, and the 11th tallest in the world. Known for its beauty as well as its height, Mont Blanc - as well as the vast mountain range surrounding it - draws in large crowds of sight-seers, skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers and hikers to the north-western Alps.
The mountain, based in the Graian Alps range, borders Italy, and is not far away from Switzerland to the north-east. The nearest town, some 3,800 metres below, is the small but popular tourist town of Chamonix, which has a population of around 10,000 people. Despite its official position within France, the beautiful peak, known to the French as La Dame Blanche (the white lady), is often disputed to be within the Italian border.
Whether you’re interested in skiing, hiking or anything else, two days is just about enough time to become acquainted with the Mont Blanc area. Hotel Campanile Annemasse – Geneve is perfectly positioned, less than an hour’s journey to the north-west, for a two day exploration of the area. Go valley walking, try out some skiing, make sure you sample some French cuisine and generally try and get as many fabulous views as possible.
A week-long stay:
A week-long trip affords you a much rounder experience in the Mont Blanc area, where there is so much to do. Be sure to ride the Areal Tramway up to Aiguille Du Midi for unbeatable views that can’t be reached by foot from 3,842 metres high. Activity is a must but, for a change, stay in the lower reaches of the mountains and explore the old town of Chamonix, nestled in the middle of the mountain range.
A family holiday:
The Mont Blanc area can be fun for the whole family, and offers more than just spectacular views and challenging hikes. As well as introducing children to skiing or snowboarding with beginner lessons, visit the Animal Park of Merlet in Les Houches, conveniently located on the way to Chamonixfrom Hotel Campanile Annemasse – Geneve. There are also a number of climbing instructors who cater for the whole family with easier routes.
