In the north-east of France, on the coast of Picardy, is the Baie de Somme. Based around the mouth of the Somme river, where it joins the English Channel, the area is most famous for being the setting for several high-profile battles, including the Battle of the Somme in 1916, during World War One. Now, the area not only attracts tourists for its history, but also for its beaches, architectural heritage and unspoiled nature.
This beautiful coastland is just a short way north of Hotel Campanile Amiens Centre – Gare and west of Hotel Campanile Dieppe - Saint Aubin sur Scie. This rugged area - with an array of nature, fishing ports and medieval towns, all in a pleasant, serene environment – attracts many visitors keen to explore its many attractions.
A two-day break:
In two days you can see the best of what the Baie de Somme has to offer. The area is famous for its wildlife, so on the first day explore the coastland, admire the spectacular natural scenes, and see how many different species of birds you can spot. On the second day, inland a little, visit and be humbled by the many war memorial sites and battlefields littered across the area – guided tours are available.
A week-long stay: In a week-long trip, add in a trip along the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme, a preserved railroad which runs along the coast. To get a flavour for the wider area, venture into some of the pleasant towns along the route. A little further afield, and towards Hotel Campanile Amiens Centre– Gare, visit Chateau Fort de Rambures in Abbeville and see as much of Amiens as possible.
A family holiday:
For family fun in the Baie de Somme, hire bicycles and ride along the coast, or, to be even more adventurous, go on a guided horse ride of the area. Also on offer are a variety of other activities along the water-front, including sailing, canoeing, sand-yachting and tree-climbing. There are a number of beach resorts, including Cayeux-sur-Mer, along the coast towards Campanile Dieppe - Saint Aubin sur Scie.
