Her name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. Born in 1876 to a local hat merchant, after a tumultuous childhood, she became a horsewoman in the circus. She later triumphed as an exotic dancer under the pseudonym of Mata Hari. She would later be accused of espionage and shot to death in Vincennes, France, in 1917.
