TRAVEL GUIDE
Discover Hendaye
In 2 days
1 week
As a family
A weekend in Hendaye, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, will immerse you in the unique ambiance of the Basque Country. Spend your first day in France, visit the city and admire the Basque Corniche. Then head back up the beach and enjoy the stunning views of the Pyrenees and the Atlantic Ocean. Have lunch in a restaurant on the waterfront and try the local culinary specialties. Be sure to visit the Château d’Abbadie. The next day, take a boat to Fontarrabie, Spain, and enjoy its warm atmosphere before making a stop in the old walled city.
A week-long stay in Hendaye in the Basque Country gives you time to discover an exhilarating destination. Enjoy Hendaye, then Fontarrabie, before exploring the Basque coast and its major cities, including Biarritz and Bayonne in France, and San Sebastian in Spain. In these areas, you'll find plenty of traditional villages to visit, like Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Espelette. For a stunning panorama of the region, head to the Col d’Ibardin. On the way, find Campanile hotels in Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, for example.
Traveling to Hendaye for a family stay is a great way to enjoy all that the ocean has to offer. With young children, you’ll prefer the Hendaye and St. Jean-de-Luz beaches, which are more sheltered and secure. You can also hike through the Pyrenees to reach the Col d’Ibardin or Larrun, which can also be accessed by cable car. As you ascend, you’ll see pottoka, the wild ponies that are native to the Basque Country, cows and even sheep roaming wild and free.

A gourmet stay in Hendaye
Basque culinary specialties will entice you, for example Espelette pepper, olive oil, garlic and parsley. Try the calamari with tomatoes, the braised beef rib and the local sheep’s milk cheese, served with walnuts and sometimes quince. Also enjoy the civelles à la persillade, known as “pibales.” For dessert, try a slice of Basque cake before washing it all down – in moderation – with a nice vintage of Sagarno cider or Patxaran liqueur. Enjoy all of these flavors during a gourmet stay at the restaurant at your Campanile hotel in Hendaye.

Must-see events
Hendaye’s culture is still very rooted in folklore and tradition and the same goes for the Basque Country as a whole. When you stay in Hendaye, you can take part in a variety of local festivals and forms of entertainment. You can discover local culture through traditional dances, regional music, cavalcades, country theatre, masquerades, and more. No matter what time you choose for vacation, you’ll discover a cultural event that will help you get to know the city. Book your room now and take advantage of your trip to visit Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

Unique and natural
One of the Basque Country’s unique features is the pottoka, a pony with a beautiful black or brown coat. Pottoka ponies live completely wild in the region’s mountains and backcountry. Staying near Hendaye is a chance to come across them during outings in nature. Oddly, the pottoka resembles the small prehistoric horses found in the paintings in the Isturitz, Lascaux and Combarelles caves.
