Split between Luxembourg, Belgium and France, the Ardennes is a region of dense forestland, mountain peaks and luscious green landscapes. Sparsely populated, the area’s main town is Verviers in Belgium, with a population of just over 50,000. Due to its proximity between nations, the Ardennes’ history has been blighted by war. In the past, the Belgian Ardennes has been battled over by France, Germany and the Netherlands. It was also a battle scene during World War Two.
Nowadays, the Ardennes is a tourist hot-spot, attracting visitors from all over the world. There are a number of great places to see and activities to do in the area, with four Campanile hotels - Hotel Campanile Luxembourg – Aéroport, Hotel Campanile Sedan, Hotel Campanile Charleville Meziers and Hotel Campanile Liege Luik – all in close proximity.
A two-day break:
The best place to start a two-day visit to this region is in the medieval town of Sedan, in the heart of the Champagne-Ardenne region of France. Visit the town’s magnificent fortified castle, but only after wandering into the countryside to take in some of the Ardennes’ natural beauty. Explore the forest, go on a river tour and, if there on a Sunday, ride the tourist train, which runs through the south of the Ardennes.
A week-long stay:
A week enables a fuller exploration of the Ardennes. Venture from the south of the Ardennes into Luxembourg and Belgium to take in even more of the superb natural beauty. Visit the famous caves at Grottes de Han-sur-Lesse in Belgium, a short journey from Hotel Campanile Liege Luik. In the south of Belgium, near the French and Luxembourg borders, explore Orval Abbey, in Florenvill, and Bouillon castle.
A family holiday:
The Ardennes isn’t just a region for long walks and exploring nature, as it has plenty of activities for children and families. The Euro Space Center, near Libin in the south of Belgium, provides fun activities alongside scientific learning to inspire youngsters interested in space. Meanwhile, in Luxembourg, near to Hotel Campanile Luxembourg – Aéroport, the Parc Le’h Adventures, offers a variety of outdoor forest fun for all the family.
