Located in close proximity to the river Seine, Le Havre is a is situated in north-west France and is also the second busiest port in the country, after Marseille. Citizens of Le Havre have helped dampen the notion that the city is synonymous with urban gloom, and, following extensive improvements, the city is now referred to as the 'Brasilia of France'. Le Havre has faced adversity but is now a city of discovery.
During the WWII and through the Battle of Normandy the port city was heavily bombed. As a result, Le Havre has undergone massive reconstruction. With 90% of the city left in tatters, the country’s second biggest port experienced a degree of damage unlike any other French city. Within the infancy period of 1945, architect Auguste Perret was granted control to rebuild the city to what we see today.
A two-day break
Strolling up and around the Aval Cliff offers wonderful views of both sides: to the left, the giant natural arch of Manneporte dominates while the Amont Cliff sits to the right. The Hotel de Ville and St Joseph’s Church, the latter a key project of Perret, are well worth visiting and the former offers more stunning views of the city. Meanwhile, Maison de l'Armateur is one of few surviving houses of 18th century design.
A week-long stay
The Cathedrale Notre Dame is worth exploring if only to see the sheer juxtaposition of 15th century cathedral against surrounding buildings built in the 50s and 60s. Why not rent a bike and drift along the Le Havre seafront to admire its genuine glory. You could also travel to the medieval town of Harfleur. A family holiday
Located close to Le Havre, Aqua-Bowling des Falaises is a family orientated centre which has many strands to its entertainment. The Espace Plage has a 25m swimming pool with waterslides, while the centre also has a bowling alley and a spa for adults to unwind in. Le Havre was granted the Nautical Resort label in 1999, meaning the city also offers a plethora of exciting water activities.
Transport
The city is accessible by train from Paris – a journey which takes around two hours - and by car, Le Havre having benefited from the Pont de Normandie which runs over the Seine estuary. However, in the peak of summer this road can get very busy. The city’s airport provides flights to 200 world destinations, while ferries run to both Newhaven and Portsmouth in England.

Events
‘At All Tastes’ is an exhibition held at the Natural History Museum in Old Market Square, from April to November 2012, which really is all about the sensation of taste. This exhibition is all about harnessing the human’s other senses - smell, touch etc. The Cultural Program and Read In Le Havre are just two of the city's many other major events.
Interesting Fact
Thanks to its regeneration, Le Havre wass aded to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This honour essentially acknowledges the ‘innovative utilization of concrete's potential.’ Despite the events of World War II and the damage the city suffered, Le Havre has become one of very few modern day European World Heritage Sites.
