The commune of Épinay-sur-Orge has appeared under this name in records dating back to the 8th century. The name comes from the blackthorn, a local bush known as Spinetum in Latin. But traces of prehistoric occupation have been found, including arrowheads, polished and stone-carved scrapers and weapons made from flint. In 810, during Charlemagne’s time, the commune even had 43 homes built around a now-destroyed church.
